RCF / RPM Calculator

Most modern centrifuges have automatic display of RPM and what RCF it corresponds to with the current rotor. If you don’t know this, you have to calculate what RPM you need to run with to get the desired RCF (with a given radius). To make it easier for you, we have made a small automatic calculator where you can calculate it easily.

  • The “G”, “g’s” or RCF (Relative Centrifugal Force) is the important thing to get a repeatable centrifugation regardless of which centrifuge you run your sample on.
  • The RCF depends on the speed of the rotor and the distance from the center of the motor and the bottom of the test tube.
  • Centrifuge manufacturers specify the maximum RPM (Rounds Per Minute) and maximum RCF of their rotors, they usually also specify the radius of the rotor.
  • If you do not have automatic RCF calculation and do not know the radius of the rotor, you must measure this. The radius is measured from the center of the rotor straight out to the bottom of the pipe (the one usually used is R-max = max radius from the center to the bottom of the pipe, see picture).
  • To use the calculator, first enter the radius and then RPM or RCF.
